Zachary Levi is DC’s Shazam

Outside of the various Justice League characters and the Batman spin-off films, Shazam! is one of the upcoming DC universe projects that we’ve been hearing the most about over the past couple of years. That is largely because Dwayne Johnson has been attached to play Shazam villain Black Adam for years now and has continued to plug it every chance he gets. However, up until now we’ve had no word on who might play Shazam himself (aka DC’s Captain Marvel). Over the weekend, director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) finally revealed that Warner Brothers has made a rather surprising choice for the role: Chuck star Zachary Levi. Sandberg made the initial announcement via Instagram:

*insert lightning bolt on chest*

THR reports that he beat out such actors as John Cena, Derek Theler (Baby Daddy), Zane Holtz (From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series), Billy Magnussen (Bridge of Spies) and Jake McDorman (Limitless) for the role. Ironically, Levi appears in the latest Marvel film, Thor: Ragnarok, as Fandral. The script for Shazam! was written by Henry Gayden (Earth to Echo) and Darren Lemke (Goosebumps) and the movie is expected to start shooting early next year. Dwayne Johnson will not be involved (he will get his own solo film first). Do you think Zachary Levi is a good choice to play Shazam?

Comic book movies are out of control. They are making a Shazam movie, but won’t have the villain in it because the villain is getting his own solo movie. WTF? Put the hero and the villain in the same movie!

Now they can charge you twice.

I know nothing about Black Adam but I believe he is both a villain and also kind of an anti-hero like Venom. So perhaps that’s why he deserves his own movie. But it does seem weird that you wouldn’t start with them together. DC continues to do things backwards I guess.

LOL. I hate that this comment made me laugh, because this is probably the studio’s rationale.

Well he’s not the only villain they can use. You could even argue he is not the main arch-villain in the comics – Dr Sivana probably. That may very well change for the movies.
