Monday Morning Box Office Report: Jigsaw Shakes Off the Rust

As expected, Jigsaw carved up the box office over the Halloween weekend although it didn’t cut quite as deep as originally expected. The return of the Saw franchise brought in approximately $16.25 million, which is the second worst debut of the series behind Saw VI although it should be noted that it only cost $10 million to produce. Some people are blaming the soft opening on the arrival of Stranger Things: Season 2 on Netflix but it could just be that people weren’t dying to see another Saw movie. In second place, Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween earned another $10 million while Geostorm, Happy Death Day and Blade Runner 2049 rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Thank You for Your Service opened in sixth with $3.7 million while George Clooney’s Suburbicon bombed with just $2.8 million (good enough for ninth place). Clearly critics were not kind to the film, but it probably didn’t help that the Harvey Weinstein scandal was looming over George Clooney and Matt Damon’s entire press tour either.
