Mudbound Trailer: Netflix and Dee Rees Enter the Oscar Race

mudbound

Although Netflix managed to score a few Oscar nominations for documentaries like The Square and 13th over the past couple of years and even a win for last year’s short doc The White Helmets, they have yet to win for any narrative features (unlike Amazon, which scored three awards for Manchester by the Sea). This year, Netflix seems to have pinned their hopes on the acclaimed period drama Mudbound, which they acquired at Sundance for $12.5 million. Set in the American South at the end of WWII, it revolves around two families who struggle to deal with race relations and post-war farm life in rural Mississippi. Directed by Dee Rees (Pariah), the cast includes Jason Mitchell, Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Mary J. Blige, Rob Morgan, Jonathan Banks and Garrett Hedlund and it arrives on Netflix on Nov. 17th.
