Gore Verbinski in Talks for Gambit Movie

It’s been over a year since we’ve had any real update on Channing Tatum’s Gambit, the potential X-Men solo movie that stalled last year when director Doug Liman dropped out over script issues. The project has remained in “active development” since then, but things finally seem to be picking up again this week with Fox closing in on a new director. We are hearing that Gore Verbinski has gotten the nod and is preparing to direct his first comic book movie as his follow up to A Cure for Wellness. Hit the jump for the full story.

According to Deadline, Gore Verbinski is currently in talks to direct Gambit for 20th Century Fox. Channing Tatum is attached to produce and star as Remy LeBeau, the mutant who can manipulate kinetic energy and turn objects into exploding projectiles as often demonstrated with his trademark deck of cards. The character was previously played on screen by Taylor Kitsch in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The current script was written by Josh Zetumer (Robocop, Patriots Day) although it is unclear if there are any additional rewrites planned. Verbinski obviously has a ton of studio blockbuster experience, having helmed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films and The Lone Ranger for Disney. Somehow he has avoided directing a superhero movie thus far, but it seems like maybe the time is right. What do you think, is Gore Verbinski the right choice to direct Gambit?
