Avatar 2’s Young Cast Revealed

Despite numerous delays and complaints of fading cultural relevance, the first of four upcoming Avatar sequels finally started production this week in Manhattan Beach, CA. Although we still don’t know much in terms of plot specifics, we have just been given our first look at some of the franchise’s newest cast members, all of which are kids. They apparently represent the future generation of Pandora and three of them are the offspring of Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Jake (Sam Worthington). Here is the full breakdown of the new characters and the actors who play them:

The Sully Family
JAMIE FLATTERS: Neteyam (neh-tay’-ahm) Jake and Neytiri’s first born son.
BRITAIN DALTON: Lo’ak (loh’ ahk) Lo’ak is Jake and Neytiri’s second born.
TRINITY BLISS: Tuktirey: (took-tee’-ray) She goes mostly by “Tuk” (rhymes with “nuke”). She is youngest of the Sully family.

Of the Metkayina Clan
BAILEY BASS: Tsireya (see-ray’-ah) “Reya” She is a graceful and strong free-diver – the young Neytiri of the ocean.
FILIP GELJO: Aonung (aw-nung’) Young male hunter/free-diver son the Olo’eyktan of Metkayina Clan.
DUANE EVANS JR.: Rotxo (row’-txoh) Young male hunter/free-diver of the Metkayina.

Former Hell’s Gate Adolescent
JACK CHAMPION: Javier “Spider” Socorro – A human teenager, born at Hell’s Gate but prefers his time in the Pandoran rainforest more than the asphalt of Hell’s Gate.

Producer Jon Landau told EW that these seven characters “play a very significant role — not just in this movie but throughout all the movies.” Does this mean that Avatar has just become a young adult series? Considering the length of time that has passed since the original Avatar, I suppose they need to make sure that they are appealing to a new generation of fans as well. Avatar 2 and 3 are currently being shot simultaneously, followed by Avatar 4 and 5. Avatar 2 hits theatres on Dec. 18th, 2020… do you think James Cameron can pull off the impossible yet again?

“Does this mean that Avatar has just become a young adult series?”

god, I hope not. I do have faith that Cameron will deliver, only because of the dude’s track record. I didn’t know they were only filming part 2 and 3 back to back, I assumed they were doing all of them. I would have thought that would make more financial sense, but maybe the studio has lost a little faith and don’t want to foot the bill for four sequels all at once. I guess if 2 and 3 bomb they have an out.

If Cameron is writing this thing alone, I’m worried. He has a hard enough time writing for adult relationships. A 63 year old with a tendency for clunky adult dialogue writing for kids doesn’t bode well. And who was clamoring for an Avatar sequel anyway? Much less several? Don’t get me wrong, Avatar was terrific–but the story, characters and setting don’t add up to sequel(s) for me.

Fuck, its about kids? I was already pretty much out…now I’m leaning towards a hard pass for sure.
