Monday Morning Box Office Report: It Floats Above the Competition

Pennywise continued to terrorize audiences over the weekend as It once again remained at the top of the box office with an estimated $60 million. That brings the movie’s domestic total to $218 million after 10 days and should put it past The Exorcist‘s all-time box office record for R-rated horror movies sometime next week. American Assassin opened in second with a decent $14.8 million, perhaps helped along by the casting of a young star in a movie aimed at an older audience. In third place, Darren Aronofsky’s mother! came in way below expectations, especially for a Jennifer Lawrence movie, although the dreaded “F” CinemaScore tells the story there. Home Again fell to fourth while The Hitman’s Bodyguard rounded out the top 5. Next weekend It should get its first real competition from Kingsman: The Golden Circle and The Lego Ninjago Movie among others.

1. It — $60M
2. American Assassin — $14.8M
3. mother! — $7.5M
4. Home Again — $5.3M
5. The Hitman’s Bodyguard — $3.6M
6. Annabelle: Creation — $2.6M
7. Wind River — $2.6M
8. Leap! — $2.1M
9. Spider-Man: Homecoming — $1.9M
10. Dunkirk — $1.3M

Prepare for the wave of throwback/retro horror movies the next two-three years. Studio execs have probably greenlit 60 projects already.
