Alexander Payne’s Downsizing Trailer Starring Matt Damon

Fresh off its premiere at TIFF yesterday evening, Paramount has released the first full trailer for Alexander Payne’s upcoming film Downsizing. This is a high-concept comedy that imagines a near future where scientists have come up with a way to shrink down human beings as a solution for overpopulation. It seems like the kind of wacky premise that someone like Charlie Kaufman could pull off, but based on the trailer I’m not entirely convinced that there is enough substance or comedic potential here to carry it through. I hope I’m proven wrong though. The movie is co-written by Payne’s frequent collaborator Jim Taylor and it is their first movie together since Citizen Ruth that isn’t based on a novel. Downsizing stars Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz and Kristen Wiig and it hits theatres on Dec. 22nd; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Going to have to agree with Cheel’s tweet about this one; It is, unfortunately, a piece of shit. The tone is all over the place and most notably, Hong Chau is really very hard to watch, mostly because that accent is so grating and fake.
