One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Prequel Series Coming to Netflix

With all the recent outrage over the possibility of an origin story for The Joker, I wonder how people will feel about an origin story for another iconic fictional villain. Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story) is reportedly in the process of setting up a new TV series called Ratched, a prequel revolving around Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Sarah Paulson is attached to play a younger version of the character made famous by Louise Fletcher in the 1975 film, who also won an Oscar for her performance. The project now has a home at Netflix, who gave it a two-season, 18-episode, straight-to-series order after winning a major bidding war with Hulu and Apple. The plot synopsis is as follows:

“Ratched is an origins story, beginning in 1947, which will follow Ratched’s (Paulson) journey and evolution from nurse to full-fledged monster. The series will track her murderous progression through the mental health care system.”

On the surface this sounds a bit like Bates Motel or Hannibal and it feels a bit weird to treat Nurse Ratched as a straight-up horror movie villain. That being said, apparently she has been a villain in the ABC TV series Once Upon a Time already, so what do I know? Ryan Murphy has had a ton of success with his TV projects but this is his first streaming series. Newcomer Evan Romansky is the series creator, having wrote the original script on spec straight out of film school. Murphy is expected to produce and direct the pilot while Michael Douglas, who produced the original film, is on board as a producer. Do you have any interest in a Nurse Ratched TV series?
