Gavin O’Connor to Direct Suicide Squad 2

With Warner Brothers continuing to add to their ever expanding list of DC Universe films over the past couple of months, it feels like some of their other previously announced sequels have been getting neglected. In particular, we’ve been hearing a lot about their various Suicide Squad-related spin-offs, but things have been pretty quiet surrounding their proposed Suicide Squad sequel. Last we heard, Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) was the frontrunner to take over the director’s chair from David Ayer, but then he signed on to direct Jungle Cruise for Disney instead. Now this week, they appear to have finally settled on a director: The Accountant helmer Gavin O’Connor. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Gavin O’Connor will direct Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Brothers. He will pen the script with his writing partner Anthony Tambakis (Warrior, Jane Got a Gun) and the movie is expected to bring back the majority of cast members including Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. It is still unclear if this movie will come before Gotham City Sirens (which is being directed by David Ayer) or the new Joker / Harley Quinn spin-off that was announced last week.

O’Connor seems like a logical choice for this project given his experience with action movies and the fact that he seems ready to make the jump to a massive tentpole project (he is also attached to direct a Green Hornet reboot). His ties to Ben Affleck also probably didn’t hurt even though Affleck although we don’t yet know if Batman will put in another appearance. The Accountant already felt like a superhero movie in a lot of ways anyway (and yes, there is a sequel on the way). Do you think Gavin O’Connor is a good choice to direct Suicide Squad 2?
