  • Colin

Excited for this customer service [love] story that’s longer than the review.

  • Jess

Not sure what Death Note is, but I love seeing lengthy customer service stories and news segments!

  • Jr

Best CS story ever. Jay, I hope you don’t end up with a stalker.

  • Gordo

Enjoy your well earned week off boys.
Next week will be dark without the Junk

  • devolutionary

Some things to like in Adam Wingard’s adaptation but considering how much of a mess this movie is to the original manga, a short review isn’t surprising. Enjoy your labour week off, boys.

  • Indianamcclain

If I remember correctly 2014 was the year that Frank said was really bad, which seems a little ridiculous. Personally, I think 2014 had the best summer of the decade thus far.

  • devolutionary

Rohan: Regarding Vancouver; in terms of independent theatres, Dunbar is another excellent option but it’s single-screen only so your movie choice might not be there opening week.

  • Karl with a K

I would be super creeped out if the customer service rep I was speaking to started looking up pictures of me during the call. Seriously, wtf??

  • MartyMcFlyJr

“Remnant Corn” needs to be added to the glossary asap. The perfect name for the shitty popcorn they serve at my local theater. Frank I feel your pain.

  • Bizzaro Nate

Jay: One Dark Night takes place in a mausoleum not morgue, not to be confused with a mortuary. Too many ‘m’ words to shove corpses in…

  • Jameson

Jay’s Letterboxd review of Making Contact had me dying. Great episode as always, guys!

  • Nobody

I’ve only seen the animated show, which isn’t without problems but is far better than this new movie. There’s some fun stuff, but it came off as another adaptation that molds the source material into something more generic. More than anything, it felt like it was Americanized into a teen drama/horror movie. I guess Wingard’s personality comes through, but I don’t think he’s the right fit. I could actually see the intricate cat-and-mouse gamesmanship and strategies from the original appealing to a director like Nolan.

  • Jake

Regarding horror reviews on the show, are you guys planning at all to check out Leatherface? I know it has been plagued with production problems, and now is only getting a VOD release, but I have seen a couple reviews calling it the best Chainsaw movie since the first.

  • Sean

Possibly. If it’s a choice between that and Jigsaw around Halloween, I think we’d opt for that.

  • Larry Morgan

Excellent customer service segment. Need regular Jay-life updates.

  • devolutionary

Check out his re-review of Alien. Same conclusion, different context. Brilliant. https://letterboxd.com/jay_c/film/alien/3/

  • Larry Morgan

Some actor ticks off the top of my head

Denzel : grinning and laughing, saying “my man”
Brad Pitt : weird squint and awful accent
    Leo : yelling
    McCounaagheyehye : drawl mumble
    Ryan Gosling : somber stare
Jack Nicholson : frantic wide-eye smile
    Al Pacino : yelling
De Niro : constipated tough-guy thing

  • Jameson

I saw that! Haha. He says all that needs to be said.

  • Loren

Jon Voight – Looking away from person he is talking to/ turning. Usually when in conflict dialogue. Almost a trademark move. Anyone know what I’m talking about?

  • Larry Morgan

The Jigsaw trailer is nice. A little less dour, slightly self-aware.

  • Beat_C

somebody call jay’s parents and address a) the cutting people short issue and b) the burping. thanks.
and no more “this might be the last episode” jokes. thanks again.

  • LordAwesome

Pee Wee is virtually unknown in the UK. So it’s not surprising that it isn’t in a BBC list.

Also, it’s not one of the best hundred comedies ever made.

  • Aaron

I’d have to agree with Jay that the Netflix original movies are basically the equivalent to made for TV movies – at least the ones that don’t get any kind of theatrical release. I’m not sure I’m ready to say #cinemaisdead yet, but we may be getting there.

  • Adam

Please share this popcorn on a cob photo.

  • wosko

    Heya Adam,
The photo that was sent in with the email?

  • Adam

Yes, to better follow the discussion and also out of general curiosity

  • Rayma

Martin Scorsese is currently making a Netflix original movie, due to come out in 2019 called The Irishman. It was written by Steven Zaillian and stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. Netflix has all world wide rights and so far has made no indication that there will be a theatrical release. Is that a TV movie?

  • Mike.

I would just like to make a quick post here about Film Junk and how I appreciate it in my own life.

I often listen to Film Junk episodes multiple times after they come out, to the point where I am nearly always listening to a Film Junk episode or one of the premiums [which I love and enjoy whole-heartedly]

A year ago I began talking out loud to the cast of Film Junk as though they were with me in the room, and it has helped my self esteem so much. I am so much more confident to go talk to people out in public now from saying my rehearsed conversations with Jay, Sean, Frankie, and even Reed. I have listened to the show so often that it is easy for me to imagine what the cast would say/do in my house eating dinner with me or watching my favorite movies (sometimes I let them pick). Thank you, Film Junk, for helping with my confidence as I really notice it in my day-to-day interactions. Keep up the great works, and I hope there are another 600 episodes in the future. Mike.

  • wosko

The first person that came to mind when listening to this segment was the legendary Toshiro Mifune…he’s got that classic neck/upper chest scratch thing he does in pretty much every film! haha love it

  • wosko

    ha, yep!

  • wosko

Hey mate, here’s the pic I took of the ‘Popcorn on the Cob’ that went with the email.

And the second pic is one I just grabbed off google for your reference, as I’m sure this photo is similar to what Frank must have been looking at when he was describing how gross it looked and how the popped corn sticks to the cob etc.

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f7ab04f22f737b4bc8594b82128976a98e68503020ee76944f3808284ebed7ad.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/106a37c3d2a42c48ba6c7922c757becf78e52a82a75b38f6d4a136a1176bc20c.jpg

  • Adam

    Thanks for posting.

The first pic I just keep looking at thinking, “It’s just corn on the cob? What kinda whole foods pre-pealed-apple-in-a-plastic-container kinda BS is this?”

The second picture is what I was expecting and it looks gross.

  • j-diggle

Nah, that’s more of a VOD release.

  • Jay’s review of Making Contact ????

  • wosko

    Ha, the best!
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve replayed it haha

  • Aaron

I heard that there will be a limited theatrical release for that.

  • Mr.TT

“TWO STROKES AND A LOAD” – this semi-confessional diamond of premature brilliance by Jay definetely deserves a spot in the Glossary!

  • Mark

On the point of charging more for premiums… have you guys considered switching to Patreon for your premium content? I would absolutely support, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

Also, can’t wait to hear Jay’s thoughts on “Good Time”. It seems like the Safdie’s made it with the express goal of getting a 6/5 from Mr. Cheel.

  • Gordo

    I’d rather they didn’t switch.
I hate the patreon app for mobile playing and enjoy purchasing the bandcamp that I then own. With patreon you leave and the podcast are gone as well.

  • Jake

Still on the fence with this one. It sounds like it should be amazing, but the younger CG-Robert De Niro that will be in it is a little odd. I would be really surprised if it didn’t have some sort of theatrical release. But there is eventually going to be one of these major films that only does get a Netflix release. I guess this could be the one.

  • Deven Science

“and no more ‘this might be the last episode’ jokes.”

Agreed, that shit ain’t funny. We have needs.

  • uhhh

Not sure that this is the healthiest way to deal with your problems???? Don’t want to be the bearer of bad news?? I mean that is great and all but still this does not sound right to me. You might want to see a counselor dude

  • Primal

Enjoy the week off fellas. Honestly you might as well take the whole month off. I don’t think I’ll watch anything until Blade Runner 2049. Movies are dead. Gaming, however is at a super high. You got Evil Within 2, Wolfenstein 2, Destiny 2, and Mario Odyssey next month. Another Game Junk would be cool :)

  • pcch7

Love me some Makeup and Vanity Set

  • pcch7

    Same. Much prefer bandcamp

  • Dstrbpx

Is Jay aware that he wasted his money on (and ranted about the) infamous ruined US-cut of “Joey” (“Making Contact”)?
Heavily cut (22min.), scenes reassembled, completely different soundtrack, additional dubbing etc.
How much $$$ did he spend on his butchered version again…?!?
