Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Hitman’s Bodyguard Tops Worst Weekend in 15 Years

It was an absolutely dismal weekend at the box office for a variety of reasons with the top 12 films bringing a combined total of just $49 million — the lowest since September 2001. Between the Mayweather / McGregor fight and Hurricane Harvey, not to mention a pretty weak batch of new releases, movies clearly were not a priority for most of America. The Hitman’s Bodyguard was able to repeat at #1 with just $10.1 million while Annabelle: Creation remained in second with $7.4 million, bringing its worldwide total to an impressive $215 million. The animated film Leap! was the best of the new releases, debuting in third although it only earned $5 million from over 2500 screens. Wind River jumped up to #4 while Logan Lucky rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Birth of the Dragon opened a distant ninth with just $2.5 million while the theatrical live broadcast of the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight managed to make more than that on Saturday night alone. Next weekend things are likely to get even worse without a single major release hitting theatres.
