Dolph Lundgren Looking to Return as Ivan Drago in Creed II

After the success of the 2015 Rocky spin-off Creed, MGM has been eager to get a sequel underway, originally hoping to get a follow-up in theatres by late 2017. It seems clear at this point that they will not be hitting that release date, thanks to the fact that director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan are both currently busy with Marvel’s Black Panther. In the meantime, however, Sylvester Stallone has apparently been working on a script and has hinted at the possible return of both Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) to the series. The former would obviously be a bit trickier and would have to involve flashbacks, but this week it looks like the latter’s involvement is all but confirmed. Hit the jump for more details.

Earlier this week, Dolph Lundgren posted the following workout video to Instagram:

Obviously the implication is that Creed II will find Adonis Johnson travelling to Russia to take revenge for the death of his father at the hands of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. It seems unlikely that he would fight Drago himself, so it will probably be Drago’s son in the ring with Drago acting as trainer. This could be pretty interesting especially given the current tensions between the U.S. and Russia, but what we don’t have yet is any sort of confirmation from MGM. For all we know, Sly is simply writing his own script in the hopes that they decide to use it. Are you excited to see Dolph Lundgren return for the Creed sequel or should this series try to do something new instead of rehashing previous storylines?

I think it would be more interesting if a much older, penitent Drago seeks Adonis out for forgiveness, and the tensions that would create.
