Shaft Reboot Lands a Lead Actor, Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree Also to Return

He’s a complicated man, but we’ve been hearing for a couple of years now that the iconic blaxploitation hero John Shaft might be heading back to the big screen in some shape or form. Back in January the project took a big step to becoming a reality after Tim Story (Ride Along, Fantastic Four) signed on to direct the reboot for New Line Cinema. Now this month they have settled on a new young actor to take over the mantle, but he won’t be alone: both previous incarnations of Shaft are also expected to appear in the film as well. Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to Deadline, Jessie T. Usher (Independence Day: Resurgence, Survivor’s Remorse) has been chosen for the lead role in New Line’s upcoming Shaft reboot. He will play the son of the original John Shaft and the movie is tentatively titled Son of Shaft. The current version of the script was written by Kenya Barris (Girls Trip, Black-ish) and Alex Barnow (The Goldbergs).

Although these “son of” storylines always sound very uninspired, what is kind of cool here is that Richard Roundtree and Samuel L. Jackson are both expected to reprise their roles as well. Roundtree starred in the original ’70s Shaft movies while Jackson starred in the John Singleton-directed 2000 reboot where he played John Shaft’s nephew (coincidentally also named John Shaft). Based on the creative team it sounds like this will be a lighter, more comedic take on the character but hopefully it doesn’t fall into parody territory (ie. Black Dynamite). Are you looking forward to Son of Shaft?
