Monday Morning Box Office Report: Annabelle: Creation Builds Solid Debut

The major summer blockbusters have passed, leaving the door open for the relatively miniscule horror sequel Annabelle: Creation to become a late summer success. The movie easily topped the box office with $35 million, just a couple million dollars less than the last Annabelle film, making it one of the biggest openings for a horror movie so far this year (only Split and Alien: Covenant did better). Clearly The Conjuring franchise still holds some weight with horror fans. Dunkirk held on to second place with $11.4 million followed by The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature which earned a lacklustre $8.9 million on over 4000 screens. The Dark Tower and The Emoji Movie rounded out the top 5. The other weekend’s other new release, The Glass Castle, finished a distant eighth place with just $4.87 million.

1. Annabelle: Creation — $35M
2. Dunkirk — $11.4M
3. The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature — $8.9M
4. The Dark Tower — $7.9M
5. The Emoji Movie — $6.6M
6. Girls Trip — $6.5M
7. Spider-Man: Homecoming — $6.1M
8. Kidnap — $5.2M
9. The Glass Castle — $4.9M
10. Atomic Blonde — $4.6M

  • That is a solid amount to make on a 15 million dollar budget. I thought lights out was decent and it garnered a positive reaction in sales as well. I am a horror fan so i will see just about anything but do you think its the concept that sales in horror? Or is it just the spectacle?
