David Letterman Comes Out of Retirement for New Netflix Series

It’s been a little over two years since the final episode of The Late Show with David Letterman aired and by all accounts Letterman has been enjoying his retirement to the fullest. That being said, he has not stayed completely out of the spotlight; he made a few appearances on the global warming show Years of Living Dangerously and has also occasionally popped up in public to voice his disapproval of Donald Trump’s presidency. Now this week we are hearing that Netflix has convinced him to come out of retirement for a brand new talk show, seemingly giving him carte blanche to do whatever he wants with it. Here is a brief description of the show from the official press release:

“The yet-to-be-named, six-episode series has Letterman combining two interests for which he is renowned: in-depth conversations with extraordinary people, and in-the-field segments expressing his curiosity and humor. In each hour-long episode, Letterman will conduct a long-form conversation with a singular guest – and will also explore topics on his own, away from the studio. The series is set to premiere in 2018.”

They are saying that some of the interviews may be filmed in front of a studio audience, although the full details of the format are not yet known. It would seem that some possible points of comparison might be Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and also John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight. Either way, this is another big win for Netflix and would provide a certain type of programming that they are currently lacking. Are you excited to see David Letterman return to TV?

I knew for sure we’d see the return of Soderbergh, but thought hell would have to freeze over to get Letterman out of retirement. Everything I’ve read about Letterman seems to indicate he likes taking it easy. It will be interesting to see what this turns into.

Hell yes. Seeing him pop up on Norm’s podcast was the absolute best. I can’t wait for this.
