The Karate Kid Returns with YouTube Red Series Cobra Kai

It’s been almost two years since YouTube launched their paid subscription service YouTube Red and up until now they have not really attempted to compete directly with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. The majority of their original content has focused on popular YouTube personalities, but this week they have finally landed a pretty big series that is sure to attract more attention. The show in question is a Karate Kid sequel / spin-off that will bring back two major cast members from the original ’80s movies. Banzai, Daniel-san! Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, YouTube Red has landed a 10-episode series called Cobra Kai after a bidding war with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and AMC. The show picks up 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament with Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprising their roles as Daniel LaRusso and his rival Johnny Lawrence. The plot synopsis is as follows:

“The series… revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). The half-hour comedy follows the duo addressing demons from their past and present frustrations — through (what else?) karate.”

Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) will write the script and executive produce with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) who will also direct several episodes. Macchio and Zabka will co-exec produce. Based on the creative team and the fact that it is a comedy, it sounds like the tone will be a bit different. I just hope it isn’t a self-aware spoof of some sort. Meanwhile, there has been no word on a proposed sequel to the 2010 Karate Kid remake starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. The new show is expected to air sometime in 2018… are you looking forward to Cobra Kai?

You had me until half-hour comedy… was expecting this to be cut from the Creed cloth. No thanks.

Comedy is alright.. how serious of a tone do you want anyways? Karate Kid is one of my favorite films of all time, and it will be see the characters on screen again. Maybe Daniel Larusso is the dick now, and Johnny the underdog looking for redemption. No Mercy!
