Jaume Collet-Serra Drops Suicide Squad 2 for Disney’s Jungle Cruise

Director Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Non-Stop) seems to be in high demand these days as he prepares make the jump from mid-range action movies to his first big budget studio blockbuster. Last month we heard that he was the current frontrunner to direct Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Brothers and it sounded like an official announcement was to be expected any day. Apparently he never actually signed on, however, because this week we are hearing that he has instead boarded Disney’s Jungle Cruise which puts him out of the running for Suicide Squad 2. Hit the jump for more info.

According to Deadline, Jaume Collet-Serra will direct Jungle Cruise, Disney’s upcoming action-adventure movie based on their popular theme park attraction. Dwayne Johnson is attached to star and he also has a strong relationship with Warner Brothers, who might not have allowed anyone else to steal away their potential Suicide Squad 2 helmer. Warner Brothers will now go back on the hunt for a new director, perhaps revisiting their previous shortlist which was said to include Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Daniel Espinosa (Life), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) and Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge).

It’s easy to see why Collet-Serra would choose Jungle Cruise over Suicide Squad 2 though. Disney and The Rock are probably the safest bets in Hollywood these days and they will obviously be modelling this movie closely after The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The latest draft of the script was written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek Beyond). Do you have any interest in a Jungle Cruise movie? Who should direct Suicide Squad 2?
