Comrade Detective Trailer Starring Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Here’s one of the strangest pitches for a TV show I’ve heard in quite a while: Comrade Detective is a cop show satire claiming to be a real Romanian TV show that was produced by the communist government in the 1980s. Amazon is now “importing” this long lost gem and dubbing it into English for the first time with a voice cast that includes Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jenny Slate and Nick Offerman. It’s a pretty high concept to say the least and seemingly inspired by Romania’s own history with illegally importing Hollywood action movies during the same era (see the documentary Chuck Norris vs. Communism). This could be amazing or it could be a complete misfire. Comrade Detective arrives on Amazon Prime this Friday August 4th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Didn’t Woody Allen make a movie decades ago overdubbing his voice and others over a movie? I think it was called What’s up Tiger Lily? A Japanese espionage movie, I think, that Woody overdubbed and turning it into a comedy. I don’t think it was out on any video format other than VHS. I remember watching it as a little kid and thinking it was hilarious. Thanks for older sisters and cousins cause it was rated R and I couldn’t rent it. Anyway this amazon show kind of reminds me of that.

Meh, it’s only 6 episodes so I’ll prob check it out. Are JGL and Tatum still doing an R rated musical? I’d never heard of this project until today, but recall hearing something about a musical.

Yeah, also similar to the Steve Oedekerk classic Kung Pow: Enter the Fist but in both of those cases they re-used footage from another film. I believe this is all brand new footage shot to look like a Romanian TV show.
