Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk managed to stave off competition at the box office over the weekend as it earned another $28.1 million, dropping just 44% from the previous weekend. That’s one of the better holds of the summer and it was just enough to put it above The Emoji Movie, which opened to $25 million despite harsh reviews. Girls Trip fell to third but had an even better hold than Dunkirk, pulling in $20 million in its second weekend. In fourth place, Atomic Blonde was a mild disappointment with $18 million, ending up closer to the original John Wick than its sequel. Meanwhile Spider-Man: Homecoming rounded out the top 5 and has now reached $633 million worldwide with a few major foreign markets still to come. Way down in eighth place, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is quickly falling off the map, tumbling 60% to earn just $6.8 million in its second weekend.
