New to Theatres This Weekend: Dunkirk, Girls Trip, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Although this year’s summer line-up has been pretty heavy on sequels so far, this weekend we have two of the biggest original blockbusters hitting theatres simultaneously as Christopher Nolan’s WWII film Dunkirk goes up against Luc Besson’s sci-fi epic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Will either of them succeed where some of this year’s franchise films have failed? Valerian seems likely to disappoint (at least domestically), but Dunkirk should get by on Christopher Nolan’s name alone and is expected to perform somewhere in the realm of Interstellar. The other major release hitting theatres is the R-rated comedy Girls Trip starring Regina Hall, Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith, which should provide some much-needed counterprogramming. In limited release, we also have the indie comedy Landline starring Jenny Slate. What will you be watching this weekend?
