Monday Morning Box Office Report: Apes Quietly Seize Control

War for the Planet of the Apes didn’t have much trouble dispatching Spider-Man: Homecoming over the weekend, although that being said it still failed to improve on its own predecessor. The movie opened with $56.5 million, which is a step back from the $72 million that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made, but essentially right back where Rise of the Planet of the Apes started on its first weekend back in 2011. That falls in line with Fox’s fairly conservative estimates but it still feels like a bit of a disappointment given the strong critical acclaim. In second place, Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming fell 61% to take $45.2 million, followed by Despicable Me 3 in third with $18.9 million. Baby Driver continued to perform well in its third weekend despite falling to fourth place, while The Big Sick jumped up to fifth after opening wide with $7.6 million. Meanwhile, way down in seventh place, the horror flick Wish Upon flopped with just $5.6 million.
