The Shallows Director Circling Suicide Squad 2

With David Ayer choosing to direct the Suicide Squad spin-off Gotham City Sirens over the official follow-up late last year, the higher-ups at Warner Brothers have been on the hunt for a new director to helm Suicide Squad 2 for a while now. Back in February, we heard that they had at least four potential filmmakers in mind for the sequel including Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Daniel Espinosa (Life), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) and Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge). It would appear that none of these choices panned out, however, because now this week we are getting reports that they have someone else in mind and he is the clear frontrunner to take the reins at this point. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Jaume Collet-Serra is the studio’s top choice to direct Suicide Squad 2. He is best known for Liam Neeson action-thrillers like Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night as well as the Blake Lively shark thriller The Shallows. Recently he also signed on to direct Waco for Annapurna Pictures from a script by The Hurt Locker / Zero Dark Thirty scribe Mark Boal.

Suicide Squad 2 would definitely be Collet-Serra’s biggest film to date but it seems like a good fit for him. Much like David Ayer, he is best known for more grounded action films and he has a pretty decent track record thus far. The movie recently received a fresh treatment from Zak Penn (Incredible Hulk, Ready Player One) and a new script is now underway with a mid-2018 production start in mind. Does Jaume Collet-Serra’s possible involvement make you more interested in Suicide Squad 2?

Pass. Only interested if Gibbo directed it.

He never had a chance. He called BvS:DoJ a piece of shit. While I agree, not sure that’s the best way to get a job directing a movie in the DCEU.
