Update: Deadline is reporting that Tarantino has met with Margot Robbie to play Sharon Tate and that Samuel L. Jackson will also have a role.

It’s been a year and a half since the release of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, the eighth film in what he continues to insist will be a ten film career. Since then, we haven’t had much information about what his next project might be, although he has mentioned several possibilities over the years including an adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel Forty Lashes Less One and also an Inglourious Basterds spin-off called Killer Crow that follows a group of black soldiers during WWII. He also hinted more recently that he’d like to do a 1930s gangster film or a genuinely scary horror movie. Now it appears that he has settled on a subject that may lean a bit more towards the latter: a movie based on the Manson Family murders. Hit the jump to find out what we know.

According to THR, Quentin Tarantino is now in the process of putting together his next movie, which will likely be co-produced and co-financed by The Weinstein Company. The script has reportedly been completed and it is said to revolve around Sharon Tate, the actress and wife of director Roman Polanski, who was murdered by Charles Manson and his followers during a home invasion in 1969. The project will be shopped around to studios with the goal of shooting sometime in 2018, possibly in the summer.

Tarantino is meeting with A-list actors about the project and has reportedly approached both Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence (he had wanted Jennifer Lawrence for The Hateful Eight as well although scheduling issues got in the way). Either way, this would be his first movie based on true events and it will be interesting to see whether or not he indulges in his usual genre flair or if he goes for something a bit more straight-laced. Are you excited to see a Manson Family movie directed by Quentin Tarantino?

a straight-laced biopic directed by Quentin Tarantino? Did I wake up in Bizzaro world this morning?

I read another story about this stating he might be doing another alternate history film, similar to what he did with Hitler in Inglourious Basterds. I would be so down for Sharon Tate going all Tarantino-Revenge on Charles Manson and his goons.

QT’s looking like Bad Coop from the new Twin Peaks.

I can totally imagine some Argento-esque psychedelia/horror imagery peppered all over this, with some Goblin on the soundtrack…in Quentin I trust. Then Fincher can do the procedural Helter Skelter adaptation.
