  • Film casual

This flippant attitude is what escalated the problem in the first place. The comments should just be ignored as I have been attempting to do. Good job fueling the fire and giving attention to an attention-seeking idiot baby. *face palm*

  • LordAwesome

DUNKIRK was shot on 70mm film. It should be watched in 2.20:1.

The opened area in that shot is just a lot of wasted space. The widescreen composition is better.

  • SJB

    True.

  • Maik

Matty Matheson is 100% right about Jay.
In all of FJ history Cheel talked about real food probably only 3-4 times (I specifically remember him mentioning a good steak exactly once), but he constantly creams over cheaply-made, overprized, industrial Junk”food” which is really only marginally related to food.
Only someone completely “indifferent to food”(and immune to self respect) would rely almost exclusively on eating instant readymade junk.

(And microwaving a Hungry Man´s is NOT cooking).

  • pcch7

are you calling poutine junk food?

  • pcch7

Great episode guys. Very nice to have Greg and Dax back again.

  • pcch7

    FJ 4 lyf baby

  • Jay Cheel

I don’t MICROWAVE it. I cook it in the OVEN you LOSER.

  • pcch7

    Sounded like normal to me

  • pcch7

only thing I noticed was that moment with Frank. But there has been some sort of static noise in several episodes in the past

  • Maik

Opening and closing an oven is certainly less indifferent than opening and closing a microwave.

  • Jameson

I still have ones from the last couple B&N sales I haven’t watched. But Stalker comes out next week and I can’t not buy it!

  • Falsk

    Wait. Whoa. Hold on.

…do Canadians not have prom? Or just homecoming? Or the term?

  • It was also shot on IMAX film, so it will change aspect ratios throughout the film. Because Nolan is such a stickler for a quality presentation.

  • j-diggle

And yet you have now fuelled my fire. No, I’m kidding. I get what you’re saying and you’re right.

  • OsoAmorito

    “less indifferent”?

  • Alicia Dwyer

Our high school had a prom. It was only at the end of the year and only for grade 12s. There was no junior prom. I think when I was in OAC (grade 13 requirement for those planning to attend university), they started to implement a spring formal.

  • Falsk

“Grade 13″? You guys are wild.

  • pcch7

Can’t believe that 5 foot nothin, no muscularity punk kid with blonde bangs tried to cheat Jay out of a good deal for Quantum Leap though. Didn’t know who he was dealing with did he

  • ah

As an ardent fan of the DCEU films and a critic of Spider-Man’s overly quippy cameo in Civil War and the Spider-Man Homecoming trailer, which looked awful to me, I can honestly say, I loved Homecoming.

It felt fresh, introduced original ideas, had a decent MCU villain for once, scaled things down, and that high tension scene between Keaton and Holland was perfection. Every time I thought the film might zig and go down in my estimation, it zagged. It frickin’ zagged! Every single time!

  • Why do those Marvel dick riders have to be on every episode when you guys review an MCU movie?

  • Van

Dax and Greg should be on every episode. period.

  • Matt Thephotoman

Hey Frank, did you get to the end of ‘The Leftovers’? I binged on seasons 2+3 after you had said 3 was looking good a few episodes ago. If so whats your verdict- TV gold or absolute nonsense? I thought it was pretty darn special and that Max Richter score was a doozy.

  • Balls

    Haha…dick riders. That’s pretty good.

  • Colin

No interest in listening to that. Please remove your hat.

  • Grade 13 has been removed, at least in my area. We’ve got prom, I honestly don’t know what a homecoming is.

  • pcch7

Maybe because they like them and it’s their show so they can do what they want? Not to mention the vast majority of us also like them a lot

  • ksc223

Personally I would not download a 9/11 premium as I find the idea of releasing it along with blockbuster premiums as though it is just a film franchise to be distasteful. Don’t be the guys who make 9/11 jokes please. Love the show and keep up the good work.

  • pcch8

hahah noo he did not! That is our classic boy jay. You and I know that our boy jay would not stand for such nonsense. Wish I could have been there to see the look on the face of that fucking little bitch. I hate him for what he did to my boy.

  • Frank Booth

Apparently you didn’t get the memo.

Film Junk is not a safe space. Try the Slashfilmcast.

  • Jammy

Agreed with Frank. jay and frank and Sean work very hard to put on a quality precut ion each week and we are not here to bitch and Moan like fucking pussies. They did a good job this week and you should let the, know that. If you have negative feedback go be a pussy with fucking Kyle S. Shut the fuck up and go puss out elsewhere

  • Just went through the builds for this, it’s going to be presented in Flat. So unless you are seeing this on film in true IMAX (which is a few dozen screens in the world), this is going to look like dog shit and have massive cropping. Plus large screens use side masking, so it will be moved in to account for the flat presentation. It’s essentially a pan and scan presentation.

  • I honestly can’t tell if you’re trolling or legit think politely asking the guys not to capitalize on a terrorist attack is “pussing out”.

  • If it’s not a “safe space”, stop trying to shut people out. Nothing about that comment is asking for that, he just finds the idea distasteful.

  • Frank Booth

    You’re right.

    ksc223, please accept my apology.

And let me just add that I would also find a Titanic premium to be distasteful.

Or a World War II or Vietnam premium.

Or a Jaws premium since people die in shark attacks.

Or a Friday the 13th or Halloween premium because people are murdered everyday.

Or an Independence Day commentary because that movie has blatant terrorism imagery.

Or a Evil Dead or Romero Dead premium because, like, they have dead people.

That’s where I draw the line.

  • Haha yes, those are all equal. I mean, I don’t necessarily have a problem with a true life disaster movies premium, but I also have empathy and can understand how someone would. And it would entirely depend on the tone of the cast, as in I get how someone could think Jay’s YouTube raw footage deep diving habit is a bit insensitive, but I don’t think he intends it that way, as you can tell when he talks about why he loves United 93.

All I’m asking is for this damn comment area to be more about discourse and less about being the fan club where any dissenting voice is silenced.

  • Jay Cheel

We are not doing a 9/11 premium. No need to worry about that. However, I would like to do a United 93/World Trade Center re-review on the regular show in September.

  • Abcd

    Someone struck a nerve here

  • OsoAmorito

Comrade, this is still Canada, please keep your national religious observances to yourself.

Hey brother ksc223, I found a video of you circulating on the internet. Check it out:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCfW6HFP5cI

You just love that screen don’t you bud? Just itchin to do everything it tells you to do. Bend right over for it, Fritz.

  • Lisa Naarseth Myklebust

Are you we talking about 9/11 2001 or 1973? Oh that’s right, you Americans don’t remember 9/11 1973, just as you don’t remember other crimes you are responsible for. And those times you do, you don’t mind making fun of them.

It’s been 15 years and I’m still expected to shed a tear fo r 3000 Americans. Not the tend of thousands of Afghans hundreds of thousands og Iraqis and all thode victims of ongoing American drone warfare (terrorism) ever since. No thank you.

  • pcch7

The dream. And Singe & Scott

  • FILM FAN

Americans kill millions of people every year and we are supposed to give a shit because some died once? Get a life. That is the fucking stupidest thing I have ever heard that I am supposed to care about 9/11.

Oh, it was sad? YEAH. NO IT WASN’T. People die every day. I don’t give a fuck. This is Canada not fucking America. Film Junk should sensor you, ksc223. Fuck.

  • kent88

    Great satire.

  • kent88

“This is Canada not fucking America”

    Also good.

  • I volunteer at a theater that is going to be showing it in 70mm, non IMAX. How much cropping is happening for this? Just the extra vertical IMAX stuff is going to be lost?

    https://hollywoodtheatre.org/events/dunkirk-70mm/

  • Why shouldn’t there be a 9/11 premium? It’s a film podcast & films were made about 9/11. What’s worse, talking about 9/11 films or making 9/11 films? I’m in the states BTW.

  • It’s tough to say how much, but to present something shot in “scope” in “flat” means that you need to edit the image so you don’t have all that empty screen space on the top and bottom. This means huge cropping of the image on the sides to get the proper formatting. Take a look at the aspect ratio picture, and do it in reverse. You would need to fit the 2:35 aspect ratio within the borders of the 1:33. You have two options, you can shrink the image, or you can crop.

In the picture posted earlier they could conceivably crop and the other image I embedded would be an example of what would be left. Now, they like people to see the transition to the larger image. So they generally do a combination of shrinking and cropping so you can see the aspect ratio change. But they still are potentially removing a ton of the image to get something that won’t leave ~2/3 of the screen blank for the majority of the film.

Basically, shooting in 70mm AND IMAX is just pure vanity, as it makes for a shittier presentation than picking just one of them because you have to compromise at least one of the formats you shot on to present both of them in the same film. I really wish Hollywood would just fucking stop doing it.

  • I did end up finding these 2 comparison charts… Looks like it will be a vertical crop for standard 70mm. I have IMAX Laser about 3 hours away so I plan on seeing it there later for comparison.
