The Gong Show Trailer Featuring Mike Myers as Host Tommy Maitland

As you may have heard, the classic ’70s game show The Gong Show (aka the original America’s Got Talent) is being revived by ABC and Sony Pictures Television this summer and they’ve landed a somewhat curious celebrity to emcee the proceedings. Legendary British comedian Tommy Maitland appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last month to announce that he would be hosting the new show, but what he didn’t mention is the fact that Tommy Maitland is actually yet another brilliant alter-ego of the legendary Canadian comedian Mike Myers! This week the first TV spot for the new Gong Show has arrived online, showcasing some of the weird acts and several celebrity judges including Ed Helms, Elizabeth Banks and Ken Jeong. But clearly the real reason to tune in will be the comedic genius of Mike Myers! The Gong Show premieres on June 22nd; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Around the Web:

  • Balls

Whoops. I think Mike is Canadian, eh?

  • Sean

For a minute there I didn’t know what you were referring to. DUH.

It was only my second mistake since I mispelled Myers originally too.

  • Jake

This is definitely an interesting approach to rebooting an old series.

  • Karl with a K

I suppose it is, but is Myers playing this straight? Like, is he just a British game show host with some cliche one liners every so often, because if so, what the hell is the point? There’s tons of real people like this they could have gotten. Is he going to be doing whacky shit to the contestants? Not really getting much from the trailer.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if they waited to reveal it was Myers until the end of the season, possibly even the entire run of this reboot. Like the last episode of the series, and Myers just pulls off his makeup, hits the gong and walks off stage. Talk about missed opportunity.
