Neill Blomkamp Still Planning a District 9 Sequel

District 9

Last week Neill Blomkamp officially announced his experimental short film project Oats Studios and released a teaser trailer for the first batch of shorts. While doing some press for that announcement, he also discussed his plans for upcoming feature films… one of which remains a potential follow-up to his directorial debut, District 9. For years there has been talk of a sequel called District 10 and it sounds like he hasn’t given up on that yet. When asked if any Oats Studios projects might tie in with his previous films, this is what he had to say:

“In order to do that you would have to interact with the studios that own those films. The whole point here is to just be autonomous and just do whatever we want. With District 9, I plan on making another film in that world. To go back and work with WETA, and make the film would be cool, but anything that preexists like that may not be the best fit for whatever we’re trying here.”

When District 9 was released back in 2009, the film was a success for Sony and even ended up with 4 Oscar nominations including Best Picture. A sequel should have been a no brainer, but Blomkamp made a conscious decision to make something new instead of just coasting on the success of that film. Given that Elysium and Chappie generated a less favourable reception, the time may be right to return to District 9 (especially considering that his Alien movie is also officially dead). Are you interested in a District 9 sequel or spin-off?

I’d be a bit nervous, hoping that it’s good, but yeah, I’d be excited to see what happens next in that world.
