Monday Morning Box Office Report: Pirates of the Caribbean Plunders Overseas, Baywatch Flounders

boxofficepirates5

It was a relatively quiet Memorial Day weekend at the box office as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales floated to the top with a less than stellar $62.2 million debut. That’s $30 million less than the previous installment made back in 2011 and it’s nowhere near the incredible $135 million opening that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest achieved back in 2006. Is the franchise washed up? It may seem like it, but internationally it was still mostly smooth sailing as the movie made $208.4 million after opening in most major markets overseas. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 remained in second place with another $20 million, while Baywatch struggled in third place with just $18.1 million. That’s almost half of what Paramount was originally projecting and it’s a rare miss for Dwayne Johnson. Elsewhere Alien: Covenant and Everything, Everything rounded out the top 5. All eyes will now turn to Wonder Woman as we wait to see if moviegoers will show up for the next DC superhero flick.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales — $62.2M
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — $19.9M
3. Baywatch — $18.1M
4. Alien: Covenant — $10.5M
5. Everything, Everything — $6.2M
6. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul — $4.4M
7. Snatched — $3.9M
8. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword — $3.2M
9. The Boss Baby — $1.7M
10. Beauty and the Beast — $1.6M
