New to Theatres This Weekend: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Baywatch

Once upon a time Memorial Day weekend used to be the first big box office weekend of the summer, but these days it’s not quite the event that it used to be with so many blockbusters opening in April and even March. This year we’ve got two pretty lacklustre major releases battling it out as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales goes up against Baywatch. It should be an easy win for Pirates, but there is no way this installment will put up the kind of numbers that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End did one decade ago (it still holds the current Memorial Day weekend record with $139 million). In select theatres we also have Drone starring Sean Bean and Amir Bar-Lev’s Grateful Dead documentary, Long Strange Trip. What will you be watching this weekend?

Please tell me you guys are planning on reviewing Baywatch. Don’t make me go see Pirates 5.

We are definitely reviewing Baywatch, possibly both. But you’re assuming Baywatch is the more tolerable film here and I’m not sure that’s the case. :)

Pirates 5 is not all that bad, but also not all that good. Had a good time, so rather thumps up than down. But I got the
feeling Depp was phoning it in, or was otherwise “not there” on the set.

Pirates should be better than the shipwrecked “Baywatch”…..
