Tom Cruise Confirms Top Gun 2 is Happening (UPDATED)

Update: Variety is reporting that Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion) is the current frontrunner to direct Top Gun 2.

It’s been almost a decade now since we first started hearing about the possibility of a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise expressing interest in returning to the role that initially sent his career into the stratosphere. After Tony Scott’s death in 2012, however, the project was put on hold for a while and Paramount chose to focus on a 3D re-release of the original film instead. A couple of years later, Justin Marks (The Jungle Book) was hired to write a new draft of the script and now this week Tom Cruise has finally confirmed that it is indeed happening. Here’s what he had to say:

We still don’t know a whole lot about the project, but if Tom Cruise is announcing it then it must be pretty much ready to go. No word on who might direct the film, but last we heard Maverick would be a teacher at Top Gun school and the new movie would “show the relevance of good old fashioned pilots in today’s high-tech, drone-centric war environment.” Films like Good Kill and Eye in the Sky have previously tackled this subject matter with the latter earning quite a bit of critical praise. Are you looking forward to Top Gun 2 and who would you like to see direct?
