Monday Morning Box Office Report: Alien: Covenant Barely Beats Guardians Vol. 2

Well it wasn’t exactly the hit that Fox was hoping for, but Alien: Covenant did top the box office over the weekend, just narrowly knocking Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 out of first place with $36 million. That’s $15 million less than what Prometheus made back in 2012 without directly using the Alien name, although Alien: Covenant also cost $30 million less to make. While clearly a disappointment, it’s still too early to tell if this will have any impact on Ridley Scott’s plans for several more Alien sequels. In second place, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earned another $35.1 million and crossed $300 million domestic while Everything, Everything debuted in third with $12 million. Snatched fell to fourth and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul opened in fifth with $7.2 million. Next weekend things are going to get a lot more crowded with Pirates of the Caribbean and Baywatch entering the picture.
