Ooh goodie. I’ve been looking forward t this ep since I saw A:C.

  • Colin

UNBELIEVABLE! You guys are da bas

  • Andrija

A four hour episode about an Alien movie with Reed is basically a cream dream supreme for every fan of the show.

  • Colin

Releasing on Monday morning makes it a Cream Dream Surprise™

  • polar909

Oh Boy! This is the one I’ve been waiting for…

  • pcch7

fek, gonna have to sit on this until the weekend when I can go see Covenant

  • Reed Farrington

This Alien podcast might also be the most irritating nightmare for some peeps because I could not shut up although I did let the others review Covenant before I “bursted” out with my opinions.

  • Indianamcclain

A Filmjunk episode on Monday morning, just like old times.

  • Brian.M

Reed face it. You might need a hug.

  • Samb

Haven’t listened yet, but I just cracked up that Reed’s much-hyped new segment runs from 2:52:10 all the way to 2:57:56.

  • Reed Farrington

Definitely! (Preferably not a face hug though. ;-))

  • Much thanks to Roman for being the cause of a classic FJ opening. I imagine that this was him listening…https://www.dropbox.com/s/7cvy6hof3c42h1o/Roman.png?dl=0

  • Claudio

frank gave covenant a 4.5? now it’s obvious he was replaced by some aliens XD

  • LordAwesome

Reed on the Alien: Covenant episode?

    *Faps ferociously*

  • Tommy

Haven’t listened yet. Just trying to imagine how you talk about Alien at that length when (imo) everything that makes the movie decent and interesting at all happens in spoiler territory.

  • Jameson

Great episode! Reed is the perfect instigator!

  • Reed Farrington

Can you imagine me as a prosecutor or lawyer? I’d drive the judge and jury nuts!

  • Reed Farrington

I think we got sidetracked into discussing the Alien franchise. I’m sad that there wasn’t enough time to justify my love of the Alien Vs Predator and Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem films.

  • Reed Farrington

I’ll need to add the word “fap” into my everyday lingo.

  • Reed Farrington

    Oh, great. Encouragement for Roman.

  • LordAwesome

Reed is totally right, a real man. Jay is a beta pussy.

    Rightly to be great

Is not to stir without great argument,

But greatly to find quarrel in a straw
    When honor’s at the stake.

  • Cocky S.O.B.

    Monday release? Nice.

  • Thurston

An almost 4 hour FJ podcast…yes please!

  • Jameson

Sounds like the next great Law & Order series.

  • Loren

I can’t wait for the podcast on the next Planet of the Apes film.. hope we get some great discussion just like this episode. Thanks for the podcast guys! As for this film **1/2 for me. The xenomorph birth sequence (made me think of Brody and son in Jaws) made me laugh out loud actually.. was that me liking it? Need to see again for sure.. could go up to a Frank 4.5 after rewatches possibly. The film lost me however after the crazy fight on the outside of the ship til the end.. From then on it lost those 2 stars.

  • Reed Farrington

Get me Wolf’s Dick on the line!

  • Indianamcclain

I agree with Sean. These new films do ruin the mystique of the original film.

  • Larry Morgan

Jay seems really annoyed with Reed.

  • Samb

A few nominees for auteur-to-jobber: Barry Levinson, Robert Townsend, Jay Cheel?

  • Sean

Actually speaking of Barrys, we should have thought of Barry Sonnenfeld since he came up earlier on the podcast. Although I guess some would say he wasn’t an auteur to begin with.

  • Sean

The spoiler discussion is at least as long, if not longer than the main review. Although to be fair, I don’t think we expected the non-spoiler review to go on as long as it did.

  • Captain Fram

Alien. Reed. Almost four hours. Oh my god. I haven’t even STARTED listening and it’s already the best episode I’ve ever heard.

  • Lori Cerny

William Shatner was in Buffalo for Nickel City Con this past weekend.

  • Bandit Manatee

Maybe it’s just me but I think Robert Rodriguez has strayed into some jobber territory with stuff like spy kids, shorts, and predators

  • Bandit Manatee

Reed you need to come back for Shane blacks the predator review. And drop some AVP knowledge. How do you feel that there is no way these films are canon? Since the alien creature was created in Prometheus?

  • Claudio

i hope they startet a new timeline with prometheus and will never connect those new films with the original alien. i could live with that.

  • A_Eye

This quote from Ridley Scott is the most damning
    http://www.alien-covenant.com/news/ridley-scott-says-prometheus-was-mistake

” What changed was the reaction to ‘Prometheus’, which was a pretty good ground zero reaction. It went straight up there, and we discovered from it that [the fans] were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original [monster] and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought: ‘Wow, OK, I’m wrong’.” – Ridley Scott

Proof that the very loud and vocal naysayers deprived us from the Prometheus sequel that so many of us wanted. Fuck the fanboys who are shitting on this as much if not more than Prometheus anyways. I fucking hate the Xenomorph after reading that quote from Scott. How many fucking times have we seen the Xenomorph running around causing havoc? It’s been more than 2 decades. Scott’s initial instincts were right “The monster is cooked”. Prometheus was dealing with interesting ideas and was a unique thinking person’s blockbuster in an era of tired superhero glut. The fanboys complain that they wanna see something new, not the same old same old. Yet when someone delivers them something new, they bitch, whine and moan demanding what has always felt comfortable from the past.

This pisses me off so much. I wish Scott had just made Prometheus separate from the Alien universe like his original rumored plans. Atleast that way he/studio won’t have been pressured to change the direction of the franchise from a fresh, philosophical, thinking person’s sci fi to more xenomorphs, facehuggers and chestbusters ughhhhh. Imagine if we had gotten a TRUE Prometheus sequel with Shaw and Vickers travelling on the ship to visit the Engineer’s planet like Ridley Scott originally planned, how awesome would that have been! Now it seems like Scott has washed his hands off of Prometheus and the ideas it presented and seems like the franchise is about to go in the direction of more traditional alien movies, such a shame.

I agree with Jay’s review, I didn’t mind this movie but it was disappointing considering the promise of Prometheus.

  • Loren

REEDs popularity almost seems to trend like Bitcoin.

  • Jr

Totally…I was really hoping for just “Covenant”. Getting the Alien part tacked on was what brought it down for me. It’s not bad, just disappointing.

  • Claudio

sadly the direction the prometheus sequel would take was clear when it’s title changed from “Paradise” to “Covenant” and from that to “Alien: Covenant”. now we will never get scotts true vision for prometheus :(

  • Reed Farrington

I still don’t get the love for Prometheus. The idea of finding an artifact or clue that instigates a trip to a strange location is so pedestrian. And the idea was not handled in any interesting way. The characterizations were stock. My problem with both Prometheus and Covenant are that the ideas weren’t treated with any panache.

  • Reed Farrington

Now I understand why Ridley can be considered a jobber. He compromised his artistic integrity by pandering to the audience.

  • Reed Farrington

So did you get to touch him?

BTW, I noticed you didn’t like the trailer for Seth McFarlane’s new sci-fi/comedy series. I liked it. I like seeing all the Star Trek tropes get skewered.

  • Reed Farrington

I hope Bitcoin’s not going away.

  • Reed Farrington

Jay never forgives. You’ve just been blacklisted. :-)

  • Reed Farrington

Actually, I can’t remember what the AVP films said about the origin of the Aliens. I suppose the Aliens could have more than one origin story.

  • Jameson

I was able to see Covenant in a new dolby atmos theater and it certainly enhanced the experience for me. This movie is not without its flaws but I liked it significantly more than Prometheus and my score will probably go up on a rewatch.

  • Tracy Threigh

Great episode (my only criticism is none of you were quick enough to start recording when the Pacifist of Fury unleashed the fury) and I agree with most of the criticisms of the movie. Jay was spot on on the Crudup character and “faith”..there was no reason for the crew not to trust/respect him because other than saying that one line there was no evidence of that characteristic in his words or behavior. Most of the crew generated as much audience sympathy as victims in a Friday the 13th movie. The “he’s not who everyone thinks he is” bit toward the was obvious and made no sense given the actions of that character during the the final on-ship showdown. BTW, do the aliens eat? Or just kill? Because given that it was so “quiet” on the new planet, wouldn’t they just ultimately starve to death?

i would agree to that. sad but true.
