Tom Hardy to Lead Venom Movie, Ruben Fleischer Will Direct

We’ve been hearing for a while now that Sony has been planning to follow up Spider-Man: Homecoming with a standalone Venom movie, expanding the Spider-Man universe beyond simply Spidey himself. A couple of months ago, they set an official release date of October 5th, 2018 for the project, but they still did not yet have a director or a star. Around that time there were some rumours floating around that Dredd producer Adi Shankar was under consideration to direct, partially because he helped put together an unofficial short film involving Venom a few years back. But of course, without any real directing experience under his belt that was unlikely to happen and now this week Sony has announced that Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) will direct with Tom Hardy on board to star. They made the announcement earlier today via Twitter:

Ruben Fleischer has been in the running for a lot of comic book movies over the past few years including Suicide Squad 2, but he always seemed to come up short. After he directed Zombieland back in 2009, he was in serious demand but the failure of Gangster Squad and 30 Minutes or Less forced him to move over to TV for a while. He currently has quite a few other projects in development including Zombieland 2, Jekyll starring Chris Evans and a COPS movie.

As for Tom Hardy, he clearly has the physicality necessary for the role and he has the name recognition to carry it. What remains unclear is whether Venom will be a villain in this movie and if Spider-Man will make an appearance (the latter seems unlikely since he is now a part of the Marvel universe). The script was written by Scott Rosenberg (Con Air, Gone In Sixty Seconds) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Are you excited for a standalone Venom movie?

I have mixed emotions about this. I like the actor, think the movie could probably be cool but won’t because Sony, am so-so on the director but love the fact that it was written by the dude who wrote Con Air. Also, I find it odd that this will be in the so called “Spider-Man universe” but won’t actually feature Spider-Man. They almost have to make Venom the hero, or at least an anti-hero. If he was a villain who the hell would he be fighting?

I hope he has a mickey voice in this movie.

I remember in the 90’s or early 2000’s that there was a Venom comic where he was basically an insane anti hero. Brock was still hating Spider-Man, but tried to use the symboit suit for some good, while acting crazy. Maybe they could go that route?
Not sure about the director, but the main casting is pretty perfect..
