Monday Morning Box Office Report: Guardians Vol. 2 Owns the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 started the summer off with a bang by delivering a dazzling $145 million debut, improving on the $94.3 million opening of the original by over 50%. That’s the second best start of the year behind Beauty and the Beast and it brings the movie’s worldwide total to $425 million after just 13 days. In fact, Guardians Vol. 2 did so well that the rest of the movies in the top 10 accounted for just over 20% of the total top 10 gross. The Fate of the Furious fell to second place in its fourth week, adding another $8.5 million to Universal’s coffers. The Boss Baby jumped back up to #3 while How to Be a Latin Lover and Beauty and the Beast rounded out the top 5. It should be interesting to see how King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Snatched fare next weekend.
