5-25-77 Will Finally Get Released for Star Wars 40th Anniversary

Happy May the 4th folks. I suspect there will be some additional Star Wars news coming later today but in the meantime here’s something to get you started. I’ve been writing about a movie called 5-25-77 ever since we started doing Film Junk and yet somehow over a decade later it still has yet to see the light of day. The movie is a coming-of-age story based on director Patrick Read Johnson’s own experiences growing up as a sci-fi geek and aspiring filmmaker in Wadsworth, Illinois who has his mind blown by the premiere of the original Star Wars. Johnson ran into financial issues and had trouble finishing the film, but after several failed attempts, it looks like it will finally hit theatres this month. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Ain’t It Cool News, 5-25-77 will receive a U.S. theatrical release on May 25th, 2017… the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars. Details are still forthcoming but it sounds like they are currently in the process of booking the movie in theatres. Granted, we’ve heard several times before that the movie is finally going to be released only to have it fall through, but this date seems too significant to ignore.

The movie stars John Francis Daley (Freaks and Geeks), who has since gone on to become a writer and director himself. It seems crazy that anything Star Wars-related could possibly have such a tough time getting released (I suppose Fanboys also had a pretty rough go of it), but hopefully it will be worth the wait. They have released a brand new trailer to promote the theatrical release of the film, which you can now watch below. Are you looking forward to 5-25-77?

I think I have seen approx. 10 different stories over the years about the release of this. I simply don’t believe this. Forget the theater. Why hasn’t this been released anywhere???

    Does anyone care anymore?

Looks like it could be decent, but that CG Pinto coming to a sudden halt looked TERRIBLE.
