Although there aren’t very many movie franchises that actually seem to get better the longer they are around, the Mission: Impossible series is up there with The Fast and the Furious as one of the few that has managed to do it. As much as people love to hate Tom Cruise, you have to respect his work ethic, his eye for talent and his sense of showmanship, all of which are key to the success of these films. He knows that the best blockbusters are built on memorable action set pieces and the charisma of their cast. Now, with Mission: Impossible 6 gearing up for production, we are hearing that a familiar face has joined the cast and it also sounds like Tom Cruise has another massive stunt planned as well. Here’s what producer David Ellison had to say about it:
“We’re thrilled. Chris [McQuarrie] is back, obviously, writing and directing after Rogue Nation. We could not be more excited about the character Henry Cavill’s going to play. And I will say after the Burj [Khalifa] we thought it was going to be impossible to top that stunt, and then Tom did the A400M for the plane. What Tom is doing in this movie I believe will top anything that’s come before. It is absolutely unbelievable — he’s been training for a year. It is going to be, I believe, the most impressive and unbelievable thing that Tom Cruise has done in a movie, and he has been working on it since right after Rogue Nation came out. It’s gonna be mind-blowing.”
Although that is clearly a producer going into pitch mode, I have to admit, it’s working on me. I can’t wait to see what Tom Cruise has in store. The addition of Henry Cavill was also recently confirmed on Instagram by Christopher McQuarrie and Variety reports that he is believed to be playing “some sort of a right hand to the head of Cruise’s unit.” It is unclear if he will be involved in any action sequences, but he was obviously up to the task in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (which Cruise was supposed to star in before Cavill replaced him). Jeremy Renner is still a question mark for the film as he may have scheduling issues with The Avengers: Infinity War this year. Are you starting to get psyched for M:I6?
