Monday Morning Box Office Report: Kong Conquers the Competition

Audiences went bananas for Kong: Skull Island over the weekend, carrying the film beyond expectations to a strong $61 million opening. That’s a fair bit less than the recent Godzilla reboot made in its first weekend, but because this movie is not opening during the summer months, it may have more staying power over the next few weeks. Logan fell to second place, dropping a rather steep 57% to earn $37.9 million. The movie has already surpassed The Wolverine‘s entire box office run and now sits at $438 million worldwide. Get Out continued to hold well in third place, adding another $21 million, while The Shack and The Lego Batman Movie rounded out the top 5. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast opens next weekend and is expected to put up some big numbers but it may not have much of an effect on Kong and Logan.

1. Kong: Skull Island — $61M
2. Logan — $37.9M
3. Get Out — $21.1M
4. The Shack — $10.1M
5. The Lego Batman Movie — $7.8M
6. Before I Fall — $3.1M
7. Hidden Figures — $2.8M
8. John Wick: Chapter 2 — $2.7M
9. La La Land — $1.8M
10. Fifty Shades Darker — $1.6M
