When it comes to found footage films, the level of quality is all over the map, so when a trailer for a found footage film called Phoenix Forgotten popped up before a recent screening of Get Out, it seemed like a bad sign that I had never heard of it before. Directed by graphic designer / vfx artist Justin Barber and written by T.S. Nowlin (The Maze Runner), this movie purports to be footage shot by three teenagers who vanished in the Arizona desert while investigating The Phoenix Lights UFO sighting in 1997. While in theory I’d love to see an alien abduction movie done in this style (not unlike Jason Eisener’s V/H/S 2 segment), this seems to resemble Oren Peli’s Area 51, which is not a particularly flattering comparison. That being said, it is a Scott Free film with Ridley Scott listed as a producer which gives it some credibility (and probably explains how it is getting a wide release). Phoenix Forgotten hits theatres on April 21st; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
