It’s been a couple of years now since Disney opted to terminate a possible follow-up to Tron: Legacy despite already having a script, a director and at least two key actors attached to star. At the time, it was believed that the failure of Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland caused them to get cold feet, although there had been questions about the box office performance of Tron: Legacy all along. Fortunately, all hope is not yet lost. This week we are hearing that the plans for a new Tron movie have not been completely derezzed after all and now another big name actor may be looking to carry the franchise forward. Hit the jump to find out what we know.
According to THR, Disney is in the early stages of development on a new Tron movie with Jared Leto potentially in talks to star. Leto had been courted to star in the original Tron: Legacy follow-up (dubbed Tron: Ascension) although at the time things never progressed to the negotiation stage. No writer or director is currently attached but Justin Springer (Oblivion) is on board as a producer.
It would appear that this project is no longer a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy but it may re-use parts of the Tron: Ascension screenplay written by David DiGilio (Eight Below) and Jesse Wigutow (The Crow). In particular, Jared Leto is believed to be playing a new character named Ares, although it is unclear if any Tron: Legacy characters will return. Tron: Ascension was supposedly going to continue with Quorra (Olivia Wilde) in the real world, but that may be off the table at this point. Would you still like to see another movie in the Tron universe? Who would you like to see direct?
