Tuesday Morning Box Office Report: Lego Batman Repeats, A Cure for Wellness Withers Away

It was a fairly slow weekend at the box office, allowing The Lego Batman Movie to swoop in and easily dominate the competition in its second week. The animated movie earned another $34 million, bringing its worldwide total to $179 million. Fifty Shades Darker also remained in second place although it dropped a not insignificant 55% from its opening weekend, pulling in $20.9 million. The Great Wall had the strongest showing of the new releases, debuting in third place with $18.1 million and outperforming expectations despite poor reviews. John Wick: Chapter 2 dropped to fourth while Fist Fight rounded out the top 5 with a $12 million start. Sadly, audiences just didn’t know what to make of Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness, leaving it to bomb in tenth place with just $4.2 million.

It’s unfortunate that A Cure For Wellness didn’t perform better. It’s not perfect but I enjoyed it and would love to see more big studio genre films but it doesn’t look like we’ll get more now.

Don’t be so sure. All it takes is a filmmaker who’s a big success financially to take something like that on, and get it greenlit.
