There has been a flurry of news recently surrounding the various DC Universe movies scheduled for release in 2018 including Aquaman, The Flash, The Batman and Gotham City Sirens, but there is one other DC project that has remained fairly quiet despite rumours that it might also be coming next year. We’ve been hearing about the possibility of a Shazam movie for quite a while now with Dwayne Johnson attached to star as the villain / anti-hero Black Adam. Just last month it was being reported that Shazam would actually be split into two movies and now this week that first movie is inching closer to reality with a director finally circling the project. Unfortunately, it comes at the same time that The Batman has reportedly lost its new director through the process of negotiation. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, Matt Reeves has dropped out of talks to take over the director’s chair for Ben Affleck on WB’s The Batman. Last week it sounded like it was all but a done deal, but that is no longer the case, although they are saying that “talks could resume when heads cool.” The reason for his departure is unclear, but there was another wild, unfounded rumour this week that Ben Affleck wants to quit Batman altogether. Ridley Scott and Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) were supposedly also in the running to direct prior to Reeves stepping in.
As for Shazam, The Wrap is reporting that David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) is in talks to direct. He also directed Annabelle 2 for Warner Brothers and New Line which is hitting theatres this summer. There seems to be a definite trend with a lot of horror directors moving on to big budget comic book movies, probably because they have proven they can handle special effects while staying fiscally responsible. Are you looking forward to a Shazam movie and is there still hope for The Batman?
