It’s been a few years since Harmony Korine’s last film, Spring Breakers, hit theatres and became the closest thing to a mainstream hit he’s ever had. At the time it seemed like he might follow it up with something even bigger, but that hasn’t really panned out. A somewhat sketchy Spring Breakers sequel was announced (which he is not involved in) and also a possible Spring Breakers remix cut (which he is). Mostly though, he was in the process of developing a movie called The Trap that was going to star Benicio del Toro, Al Pacino, James Franco, Idris Elba, Robert Pattinson and rapper Gucci Mane but after a couple of false starts it is currently on hold. Fortunately, this month we are hearing that he is setting up a brand new movie with another A-list actor attached to star. Prepare for The McConaissance: Part 2. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Matthew McConaughey has signed on to star in The Beach Bum, a comedy that Harmony Korine will write and direct. The movie is described as “a refreshingly original, irreverent, and hilarious stoner comedy” that follows “the hilarious misadventures of Moondog, a rebellious and lovable rogue who lives life large.” The movie is currently being shopped at the European Film Market in Berlin and is expected to start production in July.
While it’s great to hear that Harmony Korine is finally getting another movie off the ground, it also could be just what Matthew McConaughey needs right about now. After a couple of great years starring in movies like Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street and Interstellar, culminating in an Oscar win for Dallas Buyers Club, he went on to do a series of misses including The Sea of Trees, Free State of Jones and Gold. Granted, he does have The Dark Tower coming up this year, but it kind of feels like he needs to take another chance on something unexpected and hopefully this will do the trick. Are you looking forward to The Beach Bum?
