If you missed the Super Bowl last night (or if you want to take another look), here’s a recap of all of the new trailers that aired during the big game. Perhaps the biggest surprise was a short teaser for the second season of Stranger Things, complete with prominent Ghostbusters pandering. Netflix has announced that the new season will premiere this Halloween. Other noteworthy trailers showing off significant amounts of new footage included The Fate of the Furious, Transformers: The Last Knight and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (a couple of which also released extended trailers online). Really wish Eleven wouldn’t be in season 2 of Stranger Things. I loved her but I thought how they handled her was great

See, I really wouldn’t call what Stranger Things is doing pandering. The year this show takes place, I was about that age, and me, my brother, and some friends WERE the Ghostbusters. We even had my mom make up a Slimer costume for our much younger cousin. To have this show be about kids in this time and not mention what they’re into would probably be weird.

  • I have such a soft spot for the Pirates movies, well I’m not sure about the last one, I think that looks pretty good, if not mostly familiar. Why would you opt for Johnny Cash instead of that classic score though?

  • Sean

I agree, it’s definitely more believable than the kids having posters of The Thing on their wall. But the fact that it’s front and center in this trailer does feel like pandering, especially after a year where we just had a Ghostbusters reboot.

Because some ad exec thinks dumbing down the music in trailers to be spot-on references is better than the rousing, joyous, and memorable music of Badelt & Zimmer.

They may also be trying to catch fans of that that sweet, sweet Logan trailer.
