I’m happy DOOM got some love. It’s amazing. Sean is definitely missing out in Firewatch, the voice acting is great. Some of the best games for me have been Furi, DOOM, Unravel, Firewatch, BF1, Overwatch, Titanfall 2 and Shadow Tactics. I’ve bought so many indie games I haven’t tried yet though.

Definitely worth playing more Titanfall, the campaign alone was worth the price. Really good stuff.

  • pcch7

Also, I have a bunch of friends playing Stardew Valley and they’re all obsessed.

  • Blake in Boston

The Xbox One is a good console in a vacuum. But the PS4 (Pro not even withstanding) exists, with better performance and more interesting exclusives (hell, even Quantum Break was disappointing). But, yeah–it feels like an unnecessary console for those who would own multiple consoles, let alone a PC (which basically makes none of their exclusives “exclusive.”)

That said, I enjoyed the blunt Switch talk and Frank’s faux-enthusiasm. Also, super stoked for Embers of Mirrim. I also made up a detailed list:

  • Colin

Not comfortable posting a Top 10 for 2016, but this is what I played from last year’s crop…

    – Tom Clancy’s The Division
    – Quantum Break
    – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
    – Trials of the Blood Dragon
    – God Eater: Resurrection
    – LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens
    – No Man’s Sky
    – ReCore
    – Forza Horizon 3
    – Dragon Quest Builders
    – Final Fantasy XV
    – The Last Guardian

Sean, if you’re getting sick of LEGO and find the aesthetic of Minecraft to be eye-raping, maybe snag DQB for Kieran to mess around with.

  • HuckCity

Stardew Valley was definitely one of the games that I really wanted to try to fit in before the show, but never found the time or motivation (Same with Darkest Dungeon)

  • HuckCity

Though I agree the PS4 has much better exclusives, I prefer my XB1. As a patient sports gamer, I can get lots of free sports games with EA Access. If Sony had that, PS4 would be hands down the best, and only, console I would own.

I also found that in the tail end of the year, I was playing a lot more games on PC than on either console (though this was mainly due to me trying to play catch-up with most of the indie titles or older games)

  • HuckCity

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of God Eater and I second the recommendation for Dragon Quest Builders. I didn’t play too much of DQB but it had a good tutorial, solid controls and I liked the visuals.

  • Colin

You may want to check it out if you’re itching for Vita games… It’s Bandai-Namco’s answer to Monster Hunter and Freedom Wars

  • pcch7

Been watching a bit of Darkest Dungeon on twitch and it looks pretty good. I’m probably gonna get Stardew next month, I’ll give it a bash. Don’t know if that kind of game is for me though

  • pcch7

I’ve always preferred xb, partly because I liked the exclusives better but mostly because I like the controller so much more. But I’m on pc for the most part

  • Tim

    Did they

  • Tim

Is there a written list of each ‘caster’s Top Ten somewhere?

  • pcch7

Did any of you guys try FFXV btw? I think Frank predicted it would be shit a long time ago and imo he was correct. I looks terrible to me.

  • Colin

It’s good, best FF since the PSX era… basically Entourage: The Game

  • HuckCity

Frank and I both played a bit of it and are really enjoying it. Listen to the top 10 section of the show for more of our thoughts on it.

  • Newtman98

Great episode. I definitely understand having to get through The Witness for purposes of talking about it on the podcast, but man, using a guide halfway through is like watching The Sopranos series halfway through and then watching episode summaries for the rest. Not a criticism, just saying it’s a bummer you didn’t get to go through it without one.

  • HuckCity

Yeah, I felt a little dirty doing it as I really respect the design of that game. I went through really fast, so I imagine I’ll be able to go back through and play again and still need to figure the game out

  • HuckCity

    I assembled it for you:

    Andrew
    1. Inside
    2. The Witness
    3. Madden 17
    4. Uncharted 4
    5. FFXV
    6. Virginia
    7. Doom
    8. Severed
    9. Punch Club
    10. Gears 4

    Frank
    1. Uncharted 4
    2. Inside
    3. Far Cry Primal
    4. Severed
    5. The Witness
    6. Forza Horizon 3
    7. Doom
    8. Batman VR
    9. Gears 4
    10. Thumper

    Sean
    1. Uncharted 4
    2. Inside
    3. Unravel
    4. Owl Boy
    5. Severed
    6. Pony Island
    7. Batman VR
    8. The Witness
    9. Firewatch
    10. Box Box Boy

  • iammattz

Definitely try your best to stay away from guides or things like that. I think the best part of the game is that dopamine release when you finally “get” a puzzle. I even had a physical notebook that I used to puzzle everything out and I highly recommend it (something I hadn’t done for years and years).

  • iammattz

I sort of agree, although I’m a FFX apologist (sorry, not sorry). I think they put in just the right amount of open world hooks and boxes to check to keep the progression interesting. Overall enjoyed my 50+ hrs with the game.

  • iammattz

Great lists, my top of 2016 is…

    1. DOOM
    2. The Witness
    3. Titanfall 2
    4. Stardew Valley
    5. Uncharted 4
    6. Civilization VI
    7. Firewatch
    8. Gears 4
    9. Overwatch
    10. FFXV
HMs: Forza, Hitman, Dark Souls 3

  • Newtman98

I HAD to go buy graph paper. Each time I got stuck on a puzzle I would sketch the dimensions in pen and then use pencil to try and solve it.

  • Gordo

Anybody else notice a suspicious bubbling sound followed by a breathless voice and coughing by Andrew around minute 22? ;)

  • Colin

I can’t believe this wasn’t covered on the show:

Did you guys preorder the grey Switch or the neon Switch?

  • Sean

Grey, for me anyway. I don’t think there was a choice.

  • iammattz

Just hit the Superhot part – you guys may want to check out Glittermitten Grove. Don’t want to say too much but man, if you like games with a good meta-layer you should absolutely check it out (also some good C64 homage there for Sean).

One tip i’ll give is to dig down with the fireworks until you find the door, the game opens up from there!

  • Tim

    Gracias Mr. City!

  • HuckCity

We talked about Glittermitten Grove a bit when it first came out for the reason you are alluding too, but none of us got around to it.

  • HuckCity

Just some unfortunate vocal chord malfunction on my part ;)

  • pcch7

I listened at work, guess I must have missed that haha.

  • yonato

Sean, for the Firewatch problem, have you clearing the cache by shutting your PS4 off entirely and rebooting?

  • yonato

I remember feeling so dirty using the screenshot workaround to get the final trophy in the game. But just had to do it, it was too hard!

  • yonato

I’m kind of warming up on that neon Switch. Really in a bit of a conundrum on which to choose…

  • Sean

I was able to fix my audio issue by switching the PS4 audio settings from HDMI out to optical out. Not exactly sure why that works considering I am actually using HDMI, but apparently there are known issues with the PS4 and HDMI auto settings on some receivers. It’s only that game that ever gave me problems though. Pretty weird.

  • LordAwesome

Sean, as a Metroidvania head you should be playing the Shantae series and if you did Shantae: Half-Genie Hero would be your #1 game of 2016.

  • Sean

I did play a bit of the previous two Shantae games and thought they were okay. I can’t remember what it was but they didn’t seem as Metroid-y as I had been led to believe. Still plan on checking out the new one but will probably wait for a sale.

  • benvernel

Top episode, mates! You’re one of the only other gaming outlets (other than my own dumb podcast) that has a realistic/slightly negative response to the Switch that I’ve seen. I’m very skeptical – they can’t get third party devs making games for them if they don’t sell a bunch of consoles, and they won’t sell a bunch of consoles without a good launch line-up, and they DON”T have a good launch line-up. Damn Nintendo, you crazy.

    My top 5 for 2016

    5. No Man’s Sky
    4. Inside
    3. Uncharted 4
    2. Firewatch
    1. Final Fantasy XV

Although I just now got around to Watch Dogs 2 (amazing! so great! Ubisoft’s return to the form of Assassins Creed 2!) and haven’t played Last Guardian or Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2 or COD: IW.

  • Andrija

Great episode, guys! Since I’m not much of a gamer, I had no idea what the fuck you were talking about, but it’s nice to Hear Frank is playing Diablo 3: it’s one of those rare games I might consider jump into every now and then!

  • Colin

Frank mentioned not being into Splatoon because it required him to use gyro controls… this is simply not the case and I’m shocked that Frank is spreading fake news. Splatoon definitely touts its gyro controls, but you can play the game with a traditional dual stick format just fine.

  • pcch7

I only watched til the splatoon 2 presentation but everything I saw looked like a joke

  • I’ve sent Frank so many gifts in Diablo. They’re probably sitting in his mailbox at the hideout and he hasn’t noticed…

Also probably doesn’t need them at this point.

  • I seriously don’t get the hate or frustration with THE DIVISION. It’s easily my favorite game of the year. I know it gets some hate in the Dark Zone and getting raped of all your gear, but the patching and DLC has been excellent.

The game is fun, and it has a super cool aesthetic and locale (and time). Love customizing your character into hipster, urban guerilla fighter. Love the duck and cover stuff that work better than something like “GoW” in my opinion.

  • Andrija

Nice, didn’t know you play it too.
Also, you should be a guest on the Junk show. Episode 600, get on that, Sean!

  • pcch7

I’ve been playing it again lately and I enjoy it. The pve is more fun than the pvp for me but that’s ok, and the music is awesome.

  • They probably don’t want me dragging down their ep 600. Maybe when Fast Furious 8 comes out I can show up for a bit – sort of a follow-up on the FF premium. That would be fun!

Also, our show has our own Ep 500 coming up this year. Gotta prepare for that!

  • Andrija

If it’s longer than your 2016 YIR episode, I’m in.

  • Chris

Great episode guys. I picked up Severed as well as the boxboy series and are loving them! One thing though Sean. I think you would love SOMA if you have not played it yet. Its a SciFi Mind F*** that is right up your alley. It is a terrifying experience with a Matrix style gimmick that runs the course of the story.

  • Sean

You’re always welcome. The Fate of the Furious is a good idea or maybe even Logan Lucky?

  • Sean

Yeah I should probably check out Soma at some point. I thought it was only on PC for some reason but I’ll keep an eye out for a deal on the PS4 version.

  • SODERBERGH(!) and Kylo Ren and Tanning Chatum. I’d be up for that too. Whenever. Just throw out the Bat Signal.
