After a surprisingly dark initial teaser trailer for Cars 3, Disney and Pixar have released a new extended trailer this week that continues to build on that relatively serious tone by revealing a bit more of the story. It would appear that the main thrust of the film revolves around Lightning McQueen’s potential retirement and his desire to choose how and when he races his final lap. The movie also introduces a new rookie sensation named Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer), who appears to be Lightning’s nemesis this time around. Mater and all of the other residents of Radiator Springs remain conspicuously absent, at least for the time being. Is this Pixar’s attempt to redeem the Cars franchise after Cars 2, and if so, is such a thing even possible? Cars 3 hits theatres on June 16th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
