Update: It has just been announced that Song to Song will also be the opening night film at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.
Last year saw the release of two new Terrence Malick films (technically 3, if you count both cuts of The Voyage of Time), which makes it the most prolific year ever for a formerly elusive director that once spent decades developing each new project. Now it looks like we’re about to get another new Malick movie in the first quarter of 2017 as well. His next movie previously went under the working title “Weightless” but it has since been given a brand new title and an official release date. The movie is called Song to Song and Broad Green Pictures have announced that they will release it in theatres on March 17th, 2017. The movie stars Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender, and the plot synopsis is as follows:
“In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan Gosling), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
Coming off of La La Land, it should be interesting to see Gosling playing yet another struggling musician albeit in a different context. In addition to the main cast, the movie is expected to feature appearances from several other real-life musicians including Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Iggy Pop, Florence and the Machine, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The first official photo from the film (pictured above) has also just been released. Are you looking forward to Terrence Malick’s Song to Song?
