Monday Morning Box Office Report: Moana Crashes Office Christmas Party

Disney stayed at the top of the box office for the third weekend in a row (and the 18th weekend of the year) as Moana just barely edged out Office Christmas Party with an $18.8 million haul. The movie has made $238 million worldwide as Disney is poised to bring in yet another massive boatload of cash next weekend with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Office Christmas Party debuted with $17.5 million, which is a pretty solid start (and certainly more than Bad Santa 2 made a couple of weeks ago). Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them fell to third place, while Arrival and Doctor Strange rounded out the top 5. Nocturnal Animals and Manchester by the Sea both jumped into the top 10 following expansions, but the indie success story of the weekend was La La Land, which earned $855,000 from just five theatres, giving it the tenth largest opening per theater average of all time.
