It was about this time last year that we started getting some announcements regarding the cast of Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus follow-up, Alien: Covenant. At the time, there were some surprises including the fact that Noomi Rapace was strangely absent (she was later confirmed to be involved, but only with a small role) and a few months later we learned that Danny McBride had landed a role in the movie as well. Now that the movie wrapped production months ago, we have a report that another unexpected name has joined the cast: Danny McBride’s Your Highness co-star James Franco. Could Alien: Covenant be a lot more comedic than anyone anticipated? Hit the jump to find out what we know.
News of James Franco’s involvement comes courtesy of a fan site called AVP Galaxy, which may not seem like the most reliable source and yet it appears to be legit. They claim that he will be playing Branson, the captain of the Covenant and husband to Katherine Waterston’s character Daniels. He will only appear in the first 10 minutes or so, but he will be reprising his role in some viral marketing footage as well. Ironically, he was reportedly in the running for the lead role in the new Predator reboot as well, but ended up passing on it.
Obviously James Franco has a lot more dramatic work under his belt than Danny McBride, so this probably doesn’t imply any change in tone for the movie. He has also appeared in some big sci-fi franchises before including Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. That being said, I suspect there will be some people who object to this casting and the potential pairing of him and McBride could temporarily take people out of the movie. How do you feel about this latest bit of Alien: Covenant casting news?
