The Mummy Trailer Starring Tom Cruise

After dropping a 15 second tease last week, the first full trailer for Universal’s upcoming reboot of The Mummy premiered online last night. This is the first installment in their newly resurrected Universal Monsters franchise and it stars Tom Cruise as a former special forces officer who faces an ancient evil princess (Sofia Boutella) who has been awakened from her crypt beneath the desert. Russell Crowe also shows up as Dr. Jekyll, setting the stage for one of the follow up films. As expected, this feels much more like a big action movie than a horror movie (not unlike Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy trilogy). Still, I guess it is kind of interesting to see the normally unflappable Tom Cruise scream in terror? The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us) and it hits theatres on June 9th; check out the first trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

The first half of this trailer is cool but then it quickly becomes Mission Impossible: Mummy Protocal.

Well, this is something with a Mummy (in a Box), some action a la Mission Implausible and a resurrected Cruise. And yet another destruction of dear old London, why not ….the CG model of the city must be one of the most used. AND THE GODS returns….well lets hope this leads to Cage Match (no nic in the cage that is London) with the Tag Team “Egypt Gods” against “Roman
Gods” against “Nordic Gods” against Tom Curise. Looks like a very look end credit. A lot of poorly paid CGI slave will help Tom look good.

A movie trailer that screams…..WHO CARES.

This looks like a mishmash of WW Z, MI, and every other action movie out their that has come out over the past 3 summers. Which is disappointing since Cruise has done some interesting Sci-fi movies over the past few years.

To bad cause no one has really occupied the big budget big idea horror genre yet that could become a new franchise. Alien was probably the last one and that was decades ago. With Universal monsters…well that might have and could have been it. Instead we get another action movie with what else? Evil monsters. Surprise!

Plus I’m not a fan of the JJ disciples, Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof. Bunch of hacks and their works shows it. Bleah!

This will be a PERFECT time to do a Universal Monsters premium episode. Don’t screw this up guys.

  • Sean

It’s kind of already pencilled in, the only question is whether people would prefer a premium on the Brendan Fraser trilogy instead… with The Scorpion King of course!

Tom is muh man and he usually picks interesting projects. I thought some of that looked alright and some it didn’t look all that, hard to judge I guess. You’d hope with Cruise and Crow there’s something to it

Is it just me or did the 1999 Mummy have a way hotter cast?

  • 9No

Agree, with exception to Lindelof. I love Lost, but even if you don’t, he’s still doing amazing work on The Leftovers.

Yeah I can see that Lindelof out of the bunch is probably the one with some talent…though I do tend to think his ideas meander in the end and though his initial inception may start high concept, it ends up being…no pun intended…well maybe…lost. I think his ideas just loose focus at some point and I don’t think he knows where to go. Granted that applies to a lot of writers in TV and Movie land.
