Looks like Robert De Niro could be a last minute addition to this year’s Oscar race with a one-week qualifying run for the upcoming film The Comedian in New York and L.A. next month. In what seems like a slight nod to Scorsese’s The King of Comedy, De Niro plays an aging stand-up comedian named Jackie Burke who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a younger woman (Leslie Mann). Directed by Taylor Hackford (Ray), the movie also co-stars Danny DeVito, Harvey Keitel, Edie Falco and Charles Grodin and features appearances from several comedians playing themselves including Billy Crystal, Gilbert Gottfried and Jimmie Walker. The first trailer looks relatively low key and unremarkable, but it could still be fun to see De Niro in this role assuming there is a decent script. The Comedian hits select theatres on Dec. 2nd and expands further on Jan. 13th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
