Monday Morning Box Office Report: Fantastic Beasts on Top with Tame Opening

WB’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them rode the Hogwarts Express to victory over the weekend, easily dominating the competition. The wizarding world spin-off earned approximately $75 million which is on par with the more modest predictions but lower than any previous installments in the Harry Potter franchise. Some are seeing this as a bad sign for the first part of a five movie series (with a $180 million budget, no less), but it’s certainly something they can build on. The next movie will probably be the real test. Elsewhere Marvel’s Doctor Strange fell to second place with $17.7 million, followed by Trolls and Arrival. Almost Christmas rounded out the top 5. The other new movies in wide release, The Edge of Seventeen and Bleed for This, both disappointed with just $4.8 million and $2.4 million respectively. They are likely to get lost in the shuffle next weekend as four new major releases debut over the American Thanksgiving weekend.

1. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them — $75M
2. Doctor Strange — $17.7M
3. Trolls — $17.5M
4. Arrival — $11.8M
5. Almost Christmas — $7M
6. Hacksaw Ridge — $6.8M
7. The Edge of Seventeen — $4.8M
8. Bleed for This — $2.4M
9. The Accountant — $2.1M
10. Shut In — $1.6M
